American Friends of SESOBEL
is a U.S. non-profit (FIN
20-2759148) supporting SESOBEL of Lebanon, a
day-school caring for over 400 severely disabled
children. These children and
their families deal with the challenges of disabilities such as: Autism, Down
Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and Muscular Dystrophy. SESOBEL accepts children as
young as infants from all regions, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds in
Lebanon. SESOBEL is an autonomous institution founded in 1975 by two determined
women, Yvonne Chami and Fadia Safi, who manage and direct efforts with a
holistic and comprehensive approach.
SESOBEL is a pioneer institution with a
shining reputation of serving the community for over 30 years. For more
detailed information about SESOBEL’s
work and activities in Lebanon, please
visit their website: www.sesobel.org .
The
American Friends of SESOBEL (AFS)
began as a small group of volunteers in May, 2006 when the Director of SESOBEL,
Mrs. Fadia Safi, came to the
United States seeking support. In July, 2006, Mrs.
Ina Rihani accepted to be a volunteer Executive Director of the American Friends
of SESOBEL after
visiting SESOBEL in person. Mr. and Mrs. Ramez Skaff serve on
the Board and are financial officers overseeing the single U.S. account from
which funds
are transferred directly to SESOBEL, Lebanon. AFS is based in the
Northern Virginia/ Greater Washington, DC area, and has minimal operating costs,
as the volunteers work from their homes. In two and a half years, AFS has sent
to SESOBEL, Lebanon more than $96,000 raised by various grassroots efforts,
active group events, and devoted individuals across the United States. Along
with various fundraising efforts, the American Friends of SESOBEL excels as a
support organization in other areas. AFS volunteers translated a book entitled,
The Road of Challenge written by the youth of SESOBEL, which will
soon be published
in three languages. AFS assists with the SESOBEL website and
various other publications in English. It sends educational support materials
and software, physical therapy supplies, and facilitates the travel of medical
staff to offer training in
Lebanon. AFS has facilitated the
establishment of a Sister-School relationship between SESOBEL and Cotting School
(founded in 1893 as America’s first day school for children with disabilities.)
In September 2008, AFS held a successful three city Benefit Concert Tour
starring the renowned Lebanese singer, Joumana Mdawar, who performed, a gratis,
for SESOBEL. AFS continues to expand awareness about disabilities and promote
acceptance and dignity for each child. AFS provides a tax-exempt channel for
Lebanese-Americans to support a noble cause. AFS is a simple, streamlined, and
successful organization… it remains an all Volunteer
charity, providing Direct Assistance to SESOBEL.
There are many easy ways which you can personally assist. Check out the many
suggestions listed
on the American Friends of SESOBEL website:
www.sesobel.org/usa. Call toll-free,

or email sesobelusa@gmail.com.
We wish to
recognize and thank Mrs. Ina Rihani for her work and commitment and the
organization success. We will also add it to the directory
of American-Lebanese organizations for community service.

Renowned Lebanese painter
Fouad Tomb will held an exhibit of oil paintings entitled Oriental Nostalgia on
January 2009. This show was his first in the United States Oriental Nostalgia
is a collection of 29 oil paintings that illustrate middle-eastern portraits and
sceneries. “After immigrating to Canada in 1990, I quickly developed nostalgia
for the orient, I believe many of those who leave their homeland share the same
feeling” said Fouad Tomb. “The warm colors and hospitable expressions I used in
the paintings of Oriental Nostalgia were used to represent the melancholy I felt
for Lebanon.” Rembrandt, Monet and Cezanne influenced the artist, who describes
his style as new realism mixed with impressionism and believes that freedom and
authenticity are the keys to impactful art.
About the artist
Born in 1951, the artist Fouad Tomb, was raised in an artistic atmosphere since his childhood. He used to accompany his father, the celebrated painter Maroun Tomb, to the heart of the gorgeous Lebanese nature where he painted his most charming landscapes. Growing up in this atmosphere led Fouad to later study at UQAM University and other specialized academies in Montreal and Los Angeles where he learned great master’s techniques.
In 1994, after 20 years
abroad, Fouad returned to
Lebanon
to open a fine art school and join the artistic renaissance in the Arab world.
That same year, a first branch is inaugurated in Kfarhbab under the name of
“Arts & Renaissance” and is followed in 1998 by a second one in Sin El-Fil. The
two art schools have taught over 2000 students of all ages of which many are now
artists that exhibit in solo. Over the years, Fouad Tomb participated in group
art shows and exhibited in more than 20 shows in Canada, France, Lebanon, Qatar
and the UAE. He was awarded many recognition and valuable prizes in the Middle
East including the title of one of the hundred Lebanese personalities in 2006 in
the famous yearly book “Pioneers from
Lebanon”.
His work can be seen on his website
www.fouadtomb.com.
