" First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do."

Los Angeles-Beirut Sister City Program

Oct -19- 2007:  The Los Angeles-Beirut Sister City Program has received the equipment from the Los Angels Fire Department as a donation to the Fire Department of Beirut. Also, the medical supplies listed below valued at $400,000 have been donated. Both needs to be shipped to Lebanon in a 40 ft. container. The cost of shipping and handling is $11,000.

The LABSC is asking for you donations to help defray some of this cost. The shipment must be made in 2 weeks, any donation is appreciated. Please mail your check, as soon as possible to:

Los Angeles-Beirut Sister City, 1306 North McCadden Place, Hollywood CA 90028.

Please note that last year a few of us donated money in a matching fund program with the Rotarian Club for a similar project to install water purification system in the Tabane district of Tripoli. Here is a report about the project:  The water project to help the people of Tabane has been completed and clean potable water is running through their faucets. Attached you will find the final report on the project, financial statement and some pictures. Please share this information with your friends and thank you for your generous donations.

House of Lebanon News

bulletDear Friends and Supporters of the House of Lebanon,

Oct 2- 2007
We've rented executive offices for the House of Lebanon in Century City, with conference room availability in several locations in Southern California. We needed a centrally located physical location with office space for our new Executive Director and the additional staff soon to join the House of Lebanon organization. The reason for this expansion is to better serve our community, and to expand our fund raising drive to include corporate donations and government grants that are available for a non-profit organization like us.

The Board of Directors of the Lebanese American Foundation, after careful fund-raising analysis and studies, allocated the funds necessary to create an active professional organization to spearhead this drive. We are careful in spending the money that you have donated to us to build the House of Lebanon, and we hope the results of this activity will enable us to achieve this goal sooner and faster.

We value and welcome your suggestions  www.houseoflebanon.com

bullet The House of Lebanon Pride of Heritage Annual Banquet 2007

The Banquet was all about “Pride of Heritage.” Lebanese Americans and their Arab and American friends filled the Rodeo hall
of the Beverly Hills Hotel to full capacity. Shining examples of this pride were everywhere, Dr. Ray Irani, Congressman Darrell Issa,
the renowned actor Mr. Tony Shalhoub, the 2007 recipient of the Pride of Heritage Award Mr. Mohamed Ahmar, and indeed the
entire audience.

The annual Pride of Heritage Banquet is the main fund raising event to build the House of Lebanon. Thanks to the support of everyone,
the gross revenue of the evening exceeded $325,000.
Please view the photos at the link below. The video is under editing and will be on-line soon. Let us know your comments.
Here are some photos of the event http://houseoflebanon.com/events_pride_banquet_07.html

(Congratulation to everyone at the House of Lebanon on yet another great event which makes us all proud)

TOKTEN   www.toktenlebanon.org

TOKTEN offers Lebanese expatriates the opportunity to play a role in the development of their homeland through short-term missions.
The TOKTEN concept is a global UNDP mechanism for tapping on expatriate nationals, who had migrated to other countries and achieved professional success abroad, and mobilizing them to undertake short-term consultancies in their countries of origin, under UN aegis.

In the case of Lebanon, TOKTEN demonstrated its relevance due to the large number of highly skilled Lebanese professionals that migrated and settled abroad in the past years, and due to the country needs of all the advanced skills and high level capabilities it can mobilize. Featured Artists

bulletDina Khouri fine Art   www.dinakhourifineart.com

Dina Khouri's interest in art began with her fascination of an x-ray. A minor injury required x-rays when she was six. Seeing that image stirred a life long passion for photography and fine arts.   Dina's art reflects an eclectic mix of her visions. She now divides her time between images caught on camera and recreating those images in mixed media fine art.  Her work has been very well received and has stirred positive emotions in the buyers of her work.

Online Art Magazine  www.lebrecord.com

Lebrecord was envisioned originally by Maroun Kassab in early 2005, to fill a gap in Lebanese Visual Art promotion, and the dissemination of art information to the Lebanese Artists and public alike.

The magazine officially started its publication in January 2007, with the Lebanese poet and artist Suzanne Alaywan, and then with the Lebanese musician and comic artist Mazen Kerbaj. Throughout the year, more transformations occurred to the magazine. The comic strip was replaced with The Art Roll, which feeds information from various sources about visual art and architectural current competitions. On the other hand, one of the major sections, the Q-Record is being reformatted to start a yearly art competition, open for Lebanese Visual Artists in 2008. There are currently efforts to raise funding for the competition, and maybe extend it, to become more than a yearly event, to become a bi-annual event, or even a quarterly event, if enough funds are raised. This transformation was inevitable, since the formation of the Q-Record, was to eventually transform it into an art competition.

Lebrecord, in collaboration with the LAU Alumni office in New York, and the Graduate Center at the City University of New York organized their first art exhibition in New York City, and featured the artworks of 4 artists, 2 of whom are founding members of the magazine, Maroun Kassab and Antoine Faddoul, as well as Chadi Chamoun and Irina Verkhovskaya. The event was covered by Major Lebanese Newspapers, such as Annahar, and Al Mustaqbal.

We are in constant search for creative Lebanese Artists, to introduce and to showcase their work to the public.
Please visit our website and you can contact Maroun at mk@lebrecord.com .

 "BOSTA" The movie
website   www.bostathemovie.com
email  autobus@bostathemovie.com

"BOSTA" (the Autobus) is a film that is set in Lebanon with some of the most popular actors, dancers, and choreographers.
It is the first post-war Lebanese musical with contemporary Middle Eastern, and more precisely Lebanese rhythms, such as
the Dabke dance, which is at the foreground of the Lebanese national folklore.

It is also the first Lebanese film to be entirely funded by private Lebanese investors. This represents a breakthrough in terms of
production because Lebanese films, like in most countries in transition, rely mainly on western cultural funds.

Through a financial establishment, participation shares were issued allowing the private and business sectors in Lebanon and the
Arab world to invest in the movie.

The music of Bosta has also been a great challenge. It has made it possible to join efforts between local composers (Ali el Khatib)
and the Afro Celt Sound System, a British group from Peter Gabriel's label "Real World". Such collaboration is the first in the local
cinema production scene.

As you may know Lebanon is passing through crucial changes and the present news show the urge to adjust the image one has of Lebanon. There is a call for freedom and change.

This is a life affirming Film from Lebanon.  Please visit the website to read some of the reviews such as:   "A fast passed movie
that captures both the beauty of the country"  or  "A breath of fresh air" - Washington Post. This film is a timely film that deals
with the contemporary Lebanese society in  a creative way and gives a positive outlook to the future away from the
stereotypical image of war and terrorism.

You can email them to ask if it can be rented to show it at your community or club events.
